Uploading Banner Images and Media
Our new site has a great ‘Upload 1 large image and crop it multiple times’ tool. As an acronym that’d be something like Uoliacimt but we won’t use that. ever.
When uploading a banner image you will want to use the largest image you have as the minimum is 1550px by 550px for the large horizontal banner, e.g.:

Note that you can upload a LARGER image and it is even advised. Let’s say you upload a 4000px x 4000px image, it is much easier to have the system crop your content. Or, if needed you can upload the specific dimensions and crop. Also, always save for web and compress your images prior to uploading!
Refer to this article for more information about image best practices
Select ‘Add Media’

Next, Choose File

A pop-up will display that has all of the information for this image, such as a caption, a file title for administrative purposes, a credit field, etc.
Note that within this pop-up you are required to scroll down to the image crop options and you must make the required crops if they exist for your image type.
PLEASE always give your file a name, don’t use the standard some0LongTitleof_somehing_2012.png as the title, nobody will be able to find it. Give it a short descriptive title and remove the file extension. And always be sure to give credit, description and alt text as possible.
All of these are necessary to make our images more usable across the site. For the cropping, the options will be expanded and you will see we have five crops, 4 of which are required:

Each of these crops are different and for different purposes but you just need to select each crop, draw the bounding box over the portion of the image you wish to crop and be sure to hit save on the media pop up box. Know that if your image is too small or you didn’t fill out any required field you will have notifications at the top of your pop up modal for your media image.
Fields
There are two tabs when editing/adding news items. Here is an overview of each one.
News Fields:
- Title → Give your news story a title
- Sub Title → Give your news story a short sub title
- Date → Give your news story a date
- More News → by default this is on and displays the most recent news items except for the currently viewed item
- Paragraphs → Add in your body text, images and more to craft your news story
- Footer Paragraphs ( contacts ) → Add either a content reference paragraph to reference a specific person that has a profile on our site - or - select ‘add contact’ to add in a custom contact
- Summary → This is what will appear on the cards on the news story if no subtitle is given
- Body → The news stories are constructed with paragraphs and that is where the content should be. Body is used for migrated content and fed in content such as NSIDC.
Metadata & Contacts:
- News type → Mark a news story as a resource. News items from the NSIDC feed are automatically marked as NSIDC
- Display on Person's profile → Type in the name of the person who's profile should have this news story displayed
- Research interests → Tag this news item with a research interest
- Display on → this is much like the person profile display, but for other landing pages on the CIRES site. This is a two step process to get this news story to display. Read this article for details on how to complete this process.
- External Link Title/External Link → this is for a button at the bottom if this news story is from a different source. Note: NSIDC stories do this automatically. Example here.
- News location → Add an address to this news story. This feature is not yet being used but there are plans for it in the future. Add a geolocation to this news story by first zooming the map out, then dragging the red pin to your desired location - the form will fill in the long/lat for you.
- Migration banner → this was for previously migrated content from the old CIRES site to the new one. You do not need to edit this field.
Save
- Select the ‘Save’ button to submit your new news item
