Tip Sheet: Social media best practices

Do 

  • Create content using your own voice and tag CIRES when appropriate
  • Tag CIRES and partners
    • BlueSky: @cires.colorado.edu
    • Instagram: CIRESNEWS @ciresnews
    • LinkedIn: Cooperative Institute for Environmental Sciences 
  • Think before you post - your content creates a permanent digital footprint
  • Model good behavior and practice positivity online
  • Be accurate
  • Use a disclaimer such as “Views are my own.” 
  • Notify CIRES comms if one of your posts goes viral or if a reporter reaches out to you via social media

Avoid

  • Being a bully
  • Use social media for personal or financial gain
  • Speak on behalf of CIRES, CU, or NOAA
  • Post anything defamatory, discriminatory, harassing, intimidating, offensive or obscene 
  • Posting content related to CIRES or CU business (institute or university finances, funding, staffing, etc.)
  • Posting content that could damage the reputation of CIRES, CU, or NOAA

From the CU system, if you want to integrate:
Professional Conduct: Act with the same professionalism and ethical standards expected of any university employee, being respectful, positive, and helpful.  
Privacy & Confidentiality: Do not share any private, restricted, or sensitive information about the university, its students, faculty, or staff. 
No Political Stance: Do not take a political stand on topics or legislation in your capacity as a university representative. 
Intellectual Property: Respect copyright and fair use principles when sharing content. 
Brand Assets: Do not use university logos or other official imagery on your personal social media accounts.
