Considering a promotion to Research Scientist I (RSI)?
This promotion type does not go through the formal career track review process. Instead, it is a process initiated by the CIRES supervisor when they can demonstrate that the employee meets the criteria laid out in the RS1 definition. RS1 employees are considered regular employees and ongoing members of a team, unlike post-doc positions which are shorter-term, trainee positions, typically lasting 2-3 years.
- Timing: Promotions to RS1 are considered on a rolling basis throughout the year.
- Review Process: Promotion requests are reviewed by the CIRES Associate Director for Science and CIRES HR Director.
- Salary: If the promotion is approved, CIRES HR will determine the appropriate promotion salary based on the employee's relevant experience, and in alignment with our CIRES compensation structure.
Please note that if the employee is on a visa, the process will likely take longer to accommodate necessary immigration paperwork and protocols.
In terms of career track, an RSI level candidate should meet the following expectations:
Research Scientist I is the starting position in this career track and is held by individuals who normally have a recent (less than three-year old) PhD and limited independent scientific research experience. A Research Scientist I is expected to begin, either as an individual or a member of a team, to conduct research and/or to support research through outreach, education, and service activities. A Research Scientist I is expected to pursue activities that help demonstrate his or her promise for self-guidance and, hence, independence in chosen activities.
