This guide aims to provide clear and detailed processes for migrating your data from Google Drive to OneDrive using two effective methods: Google Takeout and Manual Download and Upload. By following these steps, you can efficiently transfer your files while ensuring that all your important data is securely moved to OneDrive.

Method 1: Using Google Takeout leverages Google Takeout's ability to export data directly to OneDrive, simplifying the migration process and minimizing the risk of data loss. This method is ideal for users who prefer an automated transfer process.

Method 2: Manual Download and Upload involves downloading your files from Google Drive and manually uploading them to OneDrive. This method provides more control over the selection and organization of files during the migration.

Method 1: Using Google Takeout

  1. Open Google Drive:
    1. Go to Google Drive.
    2. Sign in with your Google account, if not already.
    3. On the left side bar, at the bottom, take note of how much storage is being used.
  2. Open Google Takeout:
    1. Go to Google Takeout.
    2. Sign in with your Google account, if not already.
  3. Select Data to Include:
    1. Click on "Deselect all".
    2. Scroll down and check the box next to "Drive".
  4. Customize Data Selection:
    1. Click on "All Drive data included" to select specific folders if needed.
  5. Choose Delivery Method:
    1. Scroll down and click "Next step".
    2. In the "Destination" dropdown, select "Add to OneDrive".
    3. In the “Frequency” section, select “Export once”.
    4. In the “File type" dropdown, select “.zip”.
    5. In the “File size” dropdown, select the amount that is greater than the amount of storage being used in step 1c.
      1. If your storage exceeds 50GB total, select "50GB" in the dropdown. It will create multiple zipped files until all data is included.
  6. Link Accounts:
    1. Click "Link accounts and create export".
    2. Sign in to your Microsoft account and agree to the transfer.
  7. Start Transfer:
    1. Enter your Google account password to start the transfer.
    2. Wait for the process to complete (this may take some time depending on the amount of data).
  8. Access Files in OneDrive:
    1. Once the transfer is complete, you will receive an email notification.
    2. Open OneDrive and find your files in the "Apps > Google Download Your Data" section.

Method 2: Manual Download and Upload

  1. Download Files from Google Drive:
    1. Sign in to your Google Drive account.
    2. Select the files or folders you want to transfer.
      1. To select multiple items, hold ctrl (win) or cmd (mac) while you select each item.
      2. To select all, click one item and then press ctrl+a (win) or cmd+a (mac).
    3. Right-click and choose "Download".
    4. Save the .zip file to your computer.
  2. Extract Files:
    1. Locate the downloaded .zip file on your computer.
    2. Right-click and choose "Extract All" to unzip the files.
  3. Upload Files to OneDrive:
    1. Sign in to your OneDrive account.
      1. Open OneDrive on desktop using File Explorer (win) or Finder (mac).
      2. Open OneDrive on web - https://o365coloradoedu-my.sharepoint.com/
    2. Click on "Upload" and select the extracted files or folders.
    3. Wait for the upload to complete.

Tips for a Smooth Migration:

  • Check Storage Limits: Ensure you have enough storage space in OneDrive for the transferred files.
    • CU's OneDrive license includes 5TB storage each and 250GB max file size.
  • Organize Files: Before transferring, organize your files in Google Drive to make it easier to find them in OneDrive.
  • Backup Important Data: Always keep a backup of important files before starting the migration process.
