If you are currently forwarding your University of Colorado email to a personal Gmail account (which is not recommended), please be sure to follow this guide to turn off Google AI (Gemini) features in Gmail: Turning Off AI Features (Gemini) in Gmail.
As mentioned during the CIRES September 2026 Town Hall, although Google currently states that it does not use the contents of your Gmail inbox to train its Gemini models, its terms and policies could change in the future, potentially without users being fully aware of the implications. This could create a significant gap in our data protections and increase the risk of University or CIRES data being exposed outside approved systems.
This does not apply to the NOAA Google tenant, which is covered by the agreement between NOAA and Google and includes protections for NOAA data.
Please contact ciresithelp@colorado.edu if you have any questions.
